Many people imagine that NLP takes years to understand and learn to use effectively. In fact, you can learn a single technique in a few minutes and then practice and see results. By practice, I mean during your working day and contact you have with other people.
Take for example a situation where you need to stop a bad habit. Habits are actions that we automatically do without thinking and cause us problems – like eating too much chocolate. We just pick up a piece of chocolate and put it in our mouths without any self control. Afterwards the thought enters the mind that it was a bad idea.
Using the “Swish Pattern” technique is easy do and fast. Speed is an element of success with the Swish Pattern anyway. To use a swish pattern simply formulate an image of the action that you would like to eliminate from your habits. Build a strong image where you can see quite clearly how you follow this action – such as reaching for the chocolate, putting it in your mouth and chewing it. This should be very easy with any bad habit since you are very familiar with it.
This is the first image. Just the act of being able to see it clearly in your mind’s eye helps you to become aware of how the action has not been under your control. You are now focused on it and the awareness that focus brings helps you to feel more centred.
Next, develop a new image in your mind. The second image should be a very positive picture of yourself as you avoid the chocolate or which ever habit you are trying to control.
This image is positive and should be very clearly defined. This is your power image, this is your true self being quite content without following the bad habit actions.
Imagine the atmosphere, the feelings and the sounds that you could include when developing the image in your mind. The more defined the image the stronger and therefore more effective it will be.
The Swish PatternTechnique
When the urge to follow a negative action develops in your mind go to the first image. See yourself about to carry out the negative or unwanted action. In the corner of this dominant picture see the second image, waiting to take dominance.
The Action
Now, simply slide the positive action picture into the place of the negative action picture. The negative state then takes its place in the corner. It is seen as a small insignificant image of the action. The main image in your mind now is you taking positive action to continue without being subject to the impulses of the negative mental state.
If your Building of the image has been done with care and attention you will find that it is effective. Practicing this again and again will make it habit and therefore more powerful. You will experience great results that you can apply to any habitual situation in your life. You are learning to use the power of your imagination to overcome negative and unwanted states that cause you problems.
Using the Mind like a Tool
The mind is full of thoughts. Often we don’t really exert great amounts of energy generating these thoughts. They are generated by our environment and our interaction with other people.
If we become aware of this we can begin to develop powerful states of consciousness that allow us access to deeper states of mind that enhance our daily lives. That’s when we begin to take control of what we think and when we think it. Imagination is more powerful than words. Practice using images in the mind to formulate thoughts and you will discover that you can put yourself into a power-state of mind whenever you deem it necessary.
Words that bounce of the walls of our minds are generally weak and useless unformulated ideas. Often put there through stimuli that came from the outside in.Imagine how much more powerful a state of mind you can achieve when you begin to decide what you think and how you apply it to any situation.
Practicing NLP swish patterns is a great introduction to NLP. You can choose any technique you like and experiment with it. Give it time and do it correctly and you will experience results. It’s only by experiment that you will actually understand the benefits of NLP techniques and their simplicity.
